The Day of Wiping Out The Hopes of life

This is a day people of Bangladesh can never forget. Last year in this day super-cyclone Aila attacked the coastal zone of Bangladesh. It took thousands of lives and destroyed houses, crops and forests. Storm surges washed out peoples and domestic animals together.  This is the day I don’t want to remember but I can’t forget it, because I am an inhabitant of a coastal district of Bangladesh. Now I am going to tell you about that cyclone.

Bangladesh is a least developed country with a fast growing population. Although the country has a small land area, it can be divided into a number of regions from the perspective of geological formation and environment and ecological features. Among them, The South -West Coastal Region (SWCR) stands out as unique and sensitive in terms of ecology and environment. The biggest mangrove forest on earth is located here. For the particular geographic location this zone is being attacked by cyclones and various types of tidal bores.

The May 25 cyclone Aila followed by tidal surges damaged human livelihood in four upazilas of Khulna district. The trail of devastation left by Cyclone Aila is still quite visible in most parts of Shyamnagar and Ashashuni upazilas of Satkhira, and, Koyra and Dacope upazilas of Khulna. The tidal surge had washed everything away even months after the cyclone; the affected families are trying to rebuild their lives against the onslaught of a continuing fresh water crisis and the recurring collapse of the damaged river embankments. The damaged embankment and road are now home to thousands who lost their homes to the cyclone and have been unable to rebuild it partly because they don't have the resources and partly because the embankments continues to collapse at old and new points, with every new tide (gon) and heavy downpours, despite continuous repair.

At this time the affected people need some immediate and long term initiatives to sustain. NGOs and GOs have a lot of works to do here. This is the season of cyclone and flood. So I wish from my heart Government and NGOs will take initiative to face such types of disasters. We don’t want to loose any more lives and hopes and we never want any day like that 25th May.
