The Day of Wiping Out The Hopes of life

This is a day people of Bangladesh can never forget. Last year in this day super-cyclone Aila attacked the coastal zone of Bangladesh. It took thousands of lives and destroyed houses, crops and forests. Storm surges washed out peoples and domestic animals together.  This is the day I don’t want to remember but I can’t forget it, because I am an inhabitant of a coastal district of Bangladesh. Now I am going to tell you about that cyclone.

Bangladesh is a least developed country with a fast growing population. Although the country has a small land area, it can be divided into a number of regions from the perspective of geological formation and environment and ecological features. Among them, The South -West Coastal Region (SWCR) stands out as unique and sensitive in terms of ecology and environment. The biggest mangrove forest on earth is located here. For the particular geographic location this zone is being attacked by cyclones and various types of tidal bores.

The May 25 cyclone Aila followed by tidal surges damaged human livelihood in four upazilas of Khulna district. The trail of devastation left by Cyclone Aila is still quite visible in most parts of Shyamnagar and Ashashuni upazilas of Satkhira, and, Koyra and Dacope upazilas of Khulna. The tidal surge had washed everything away even months after the cyclone; the affected families are trying to rebuild their lives against the onslaught of a continuing fresh water crisis and the recurring collapse of the damaged river embankments. The damaged embankment and road are now home to thousands who lost their homes to the cyclone and have been unable to rebuild it partly because they don't have the resources and partly because the embankments continues to collapse at old and new points, with every new tide (gon) and heavy downpours, despite continuous repair.

At this time the affected people need some immediate and long term initiatives to sustain. NGOs and GOs have a lot of works to do here. This is the season of cyclone and flood. So I wish from my heart Government and NGOs will take initiative to face such types of disasters. We don’t want to loose any more lives and hopes and we never want any day like that 25th May.

Horrible Train Journey in Bangladesh

I am going to tell you a horrible experience in a train journey. Train journey is very much popular in Bangladesh. For long journey for long journey express train is suitable. But this is a story about a train journey which is not with a very much express train. Locally we term this type of train as mail train or local train. There is no first class or second class cabin in these types of trains. These trains are very crowdie and most of the time people make short journey with these types of trains. But I had to make a long journey for around ten hours. That was a horrible experience. I want to tell you one of the horrible experiences now. That experience is about time.

Last week, when I went to Nator a district full of heritage sites to visit some a historical place named by Qeen Vobani’s plalace. After enjoying the beautiful sites of the palace I decided to return back to Khulna. Then I went to Nator railway station and I noticed that there is no express train before 10.30pm. But I was in the station at 3.00pm. I had no interest to wait for such a long time. So I decided to make a journey to Khulna by a mail train. That was because I had no experience before about mail train of Bangladesh.

I collected a ticket and stared waiting for the train. Station-master told me to wait for only half an hour and the train reached the station just in three hours. Now think about it how horrible the experience could be when there is no place to seat anywhere in the station. About three hours I had to wait in that situation.

Then the train reached the station and my journey had started.  There was no place to stand in the train. So I had to remove thinking of getting a place to sit. After about three hours I got a seat to sit. That was the most horrible experience of my life. The last time to reach Khulna was 1130pm and the train reached at 3.30am.

But I gathered some interesting experiences during that journey also. These will be discussed later in my blog. Stay with me and read my post to the story about my interesting experiences. I will give at least two posts in a week with different types of interesting experiences. Thank you to read the post.

Accommodation Problem and Solution for KU Students

Hi, I am a student of Khulna University, Bangladesh. This is a good university to read. The environment of the campus is very good relative to other public Universities of Bangladesh. There is no student politics in the campus. And the most important thing is that, students can complete their graduation in due time which seems as a rare and quality in Bangladesh. But there is a big problem students have to face to read in this University, residential problem.
The University has only two residential halls for male students and one for female students. These residential halls can’t accommodate only half of the total University students. This is well known to the KU students that students can get a legal seat to live in the residential halls at the end of third year or at begin of the fourth year. This is reality, but there no need to be scared. Because there are some places which can ensure a student to be accommodated suitably. This article is for informing the students who are going to be admitted in KU.

I live with my family. So I had not to face any problem for the accommodation. But a large number of my friends had to face this problem. There are some selected places near to the campus where students can live. Nirala residential area is the most famous place for student’s accommodation. Some students jointly can rent a suitable house and share it. In this way, a single student can ensure his accommodation in 500-100 Tk only. The students together can employee a cook for themselves which is available and not very costly for them. This will help them to save money and ensure hygienic food.
Gallamari is another popular place for students’ accommodation. This place is just beside the campus. There are some boardings here for students. Some students jointly can rent house here like Nirala. Accomodation in nirala in gallamari is cheaper than Nirala. But students like Nirala most because of availability of service facilities.
So, what now? Get yourself ready to admitted in KU. If this article can help you to solve your accommodation problem, I will be proud of myself. Thank you.

I am Abdur Rakib

I am Rakib. My full name is A. Rakib Uddin. I am a student of Urban and Rural Planning Discipline, Khulna University, Bangladesh. I am in final year now. Now, I am a student but I don’t know what will be my status after this year when I will be a graduate. A graduation degree can bring happiness to all students, but I know this degree will say me that I will then ready to get a job, ready to take some responsibilities. At last, my family has been supporting me since I have born and bred. Now, it’s the time for me to take the responsibilities of the family. But you know, the uncertainty to get a good job is very common in Bangladesh. I am very anxious about it. I don’t know what type of job is waiting for me. I want to prepare myself to do something well. But these can be discussed later. Now, I want to tell you something about me.

I was born in Paikgacha, a sub-district of Khulna district at 31st December 1988. I was the first son of my family and I think I am very lucky. You know, I am very proud of it too. Now, I have a very loving younger brother. Mother, Father, a brother and me these are the members of my happy family. Someone will be included in future, God knows well about it. My father is a government service holder and my mother is a housewife. I and my family are living in Khulna city now.

I was a student of Khulna Zilla School and Khulna Majid Memorial City College before. Then I get admitted in Khulna University at 2007. Now, future is uncertain. So I don’t know what will be the future of me. But I am optimistic.

I love to read novels of Md. Jafar Iqbal and Shirshendu Mukhapadhaie. But my most favorite writer is Sayad Mujtaba Ali. He had written some really good books. My favorite writing is “Deshe Bideshe” by Sayad Mujtaba Ali. This book is about tour to Afganisthan. I like to visit different places also.

I like to eat also, especially rice and different types of curry prepared by my mother. These are really delicious. I also like to eat mango, the king of all fruits. My favorite color is light green and light blue. And last of all my favorite persons are my mother and father.

And love? Yap! I love someone who is very special to me. No, not now, this will be later. So, this is me and this is all for now. Thank you.

Curse Given by God or Climate Change effect?

Hi, I am an inhabitant of Bangladesh. This country is poor and a part of well known the third world country. The country is full of natural beauty but most of the people of the country are poor. But, I think the strangest thing in the world is that, those poor people are very happy to bear their life. They have no complain about their life. They are poor, they have no facilities to hold a modern life and last of all they have no money to lead a sustainable life. But they are happy. Most of the people of Bangladesh live in village areas. They are poor farmers, fishermen, day-laborer etc. they live their own houses with a lot of family members. Most of the time they have to live such types of life where they have to collect their daily needs daily. You can’t imagine what types of sufferings a disaster can bring to the poor people, if you don’t see it with your own eyes.

Aila, the name of a well known super cyclone which destroyed the livelihood of the coastal areas of Bangladesh showed its aggression in May, 2009. Thousands of people had died and millions of houses were destroyed totally or partially. I can’t find yet any way to remove the horrible experiences during this disaster. Now, I am going to tell you about the sufferings brought by Aila.

My home district Khulna is one of the coastal districts of Bangladesh. I am living in Khulna city and studying in Khulna University. During Aila I was in Khulna city. My native village is named by Raruli in Paikgacha sub-district under Khulna district. Aila attacked Khulna city but harmed very less. But my village was totally destroyed. I went to the village after Aila and I can’t forget what I watched their.

I saw the unbearable sufferings of the people which can’t be illustrated in words. Water, water and water all over the village, roads rarely were found to reach home. Sea water inundated all. Houses all over the villages had destroyed. People had no place to live. The embankments of Kabatakh River were destroyed due to storm surge. And the sea water inundated the villages. Some people took shelters at the cyclone-centre, schools etc. but their accommodation capacity were very low. So people were forced to live on the roof of the houses which were not destroyed. Some people took shelter on big trees.

People had no food to eat, no water to drink, different types of water diesis all over the village and no medicine and last of all people had nothing to survive. Their happy life was totally destroyed by God given cyclone. There was no touch of happiness at the Aila affected areas. All crops and fishery farms were destroyed. So, people’s hopes for future were also inundated by the flood water.

I don’t want to tell you about the relief work after cyclone because those are the history of corruption. I can’t understand yet, how some dishonest people could grasp all the relief which should be reached to the poor people.

Corruption is very common in Bangladesh. Government bodies as well as political parties are not cordial enough about people’s welfare. But people had no accusation about this. They were happy by themselves. But the cyclone Aila inundated their happiness and hopes of life. Now, I ask myself, what is disaster? Are these the curse given by the God? What was the sin done by the poor people? Or is it a climate change effect? Can you say?
